When a Full Migration Isn’t Feasible Yet, Adobe Commerce Optimizer Still Moves You Forward

If you’re running Adobe Commerce on an aging PaaS version, you already know the clock is running. Version 2.4.6 reached end of standard software support in August 2026, and 2.4.7 follows in May 2027. For distributors and manufacturers, that timeline lands in the middle of budget cycles, ERP projects, and headcount constraints that were set months ago and aren’t moving.

A full migration to Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service is the right long-term destination for most of these businesses. It’s also a true re-architecture: customizations move to App Builder, integrations move through API Mesh, the storefront gets rebuilt on Edge Delivery Services. That’s a meaningful undertaking, and for a lot of teams a full migration project isn’t in the cards right now due to IT bandwidth, ERP dependencies, budget and/or timing.

That is where Adobe Commerce Optimizer (ACO) comes in. ACO is a headless storefront and merchandising layer that sits in front of the commerce platform you already run, whether that is Adobe Commerce or another engine. Because the front end is decoupled from the back end, you get a high-performing storefront, AI-driven merchandising, and a scalable catalog without re-platforming: your existing system keeps handling cart, checkout, and order processing. And because ACO is built on the same storefront, catalog, and App Builder components as Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, the work carries forward when you are ready to make that move.

The three things we hear most often

When we ask customers what their growth blockers are, we typically hear three common themes:

  1. Limited reach and visibility. Entering a new region, adding a brand, or standing up a partner storefront usually means duplicating catalog work or waiting on a development queue. Discovery is shifting too: according to Adobe, approximately 42% of U.S consumers had used AI assistants for online shopping as of July 2026, turning to AI tools for product research and price comparison instead of traditional search. That makes visibility amongst LLM’s such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude a growing requirement rather than a nice-to-have.
  2. Conversion: Buyers expect a personalized and fast purchasing experience. With ACO, a set of AI-powered merchandising microservices, including Product Recommendations, Live Search, Intelligent Merchandising, as well as segment-specific content and offers can scale up personalization without extra work for you or your team. This in turn reduces cart abandonment and increases your revenue conversion.
  3. The cost of standing still. Legacy, heavily customized platforms are expensive to keep running, and most IT leaders will tell you outdated technology is actively holding back their ability to innovate. If you’re operating on a legacy platform, you’re enduring a perpetual update and patching cycle just to stay current with security and compliance amongst other factors. Every hour spent maintaining your infrastructure is an hour not spent building something that drives revenue.

These pain points can be resolved with a better front end and better merchandising tools, which is exactly what Commerce Optimizer delivers without touching your backend.

The building blocks

Commerce Optimizer is composable and modular, and it’s designed to work with the backend you have today. Here are the core components:

Commerce Storefront, powered by Edge Delivery. A modern, fast-loading front end that replaces an aging Luma theme without requiring a backend change. Faster pages mean lower bounce and better conversion, and the architecture is built to score well on the technical signals that drive organic search.

Product visuals through AEM Assets. Merchandisers can generate product imagery with GenAI tools, assign it to SKUs, and push it to the storefront in minutes, with no developer, and no separate DAM license required (though it draws on credits).

Catalog Views and Policies. This is the piece that lets you manage pricing, merchandising rules, and product visibility across regions, brands, or partner storefronts from a single master catalog, instead of duplicating catalog data for every new segment.

App Builder and API Mesh. The same extensibility layer used in a full ACCS migration, available now for integrations and custom logic that need to live outside the Commerce core.

AI-powered site optimization. Search and recommendations tuned by machine learning, plus reporting that shows the before-and-after impact of changes your team makes.

Because the front end is decoupled from your existing PaaS backend, your team isn’t waiting on a data migration or a parallel-run cutover to see results. The storefront and merchandising layer go live on top of what you already have.

What it means day to day

For a merchandising team, the shift is mostly about who can make changes and how fast. Content updates, test launches, and product recommendations no longer route through a development backlog; they happen through a visual editor or a document-style interface built for business users. The result shows up directly in the numbers. Adobe business has reported that their customers witness a 25% lift from product recommendations and a 7% boost from search, not to mention reduced time spent producing content in the first place. For B2B organizations running distributor networks or co-branded storefronts, Catalog Views and Policies solve a specific structural problem: one master catalog, with distinct pricing, branding, and product rules per partner or region, governed from a single source of truth instead of a spreadsheet of exceptions.

The right decision for your business

It’s important to note that Commerce Optimizer requires its own Adobe licensing. It’s not a free add on to your existing PaaS contract, and that conversation happens directly with Adobe. It’s also not the right fit for every situation. If your platform’s complexity and customization needs still make PaaS the right home for your business, a storefront overlay isn’t a substitute for that conversation.

Most of the businesses we speak to are in a dilemma scenario- “we can’t re-platform this year” and “we can’t afford to keep losing ground on performance and conversion.” Adobe Commerce Optimizer becomes the perfect middle ground solution to support
